Ohlone Elementary School

Palo Alto, CA

Cornerstone designed a new two-story wood and steel framed classroom building to replace existing portables and modified and expanded the wood-framed campus library. The project increased the variety of landscape available to the children and reinforced the use of an existing organic school farm. The building maintains an indoor/outdoor adjacency and is next to the farm to facilitate the use of the new science/flex room as a resource. The new classroom building has an open second-floor deck that incorporates a “green”, living roof. The design uses daylight and stack ventilation. Light cannons and fins both screen and bounce daylight into the classrooms. Light cannons also provide chimneys for natural ventilation. High clerestories opening create low pressure that brings in outside air through acoustic louvers on outside walls.
