Fulkerth Road at State Route 99 Interchange

Turlock, CA

In order to support the future growth of the City of Turlock, the State Route 99/Fulkerth Road interchange required an upgrade. A key component of this upgrade was removing the bottleneck created by the embankments at the State Route 99 bridges and widening of the roadway to support the addition of dedicated left turn lanes, bike lanes, and sidewalks. In order to solve this problem, GHD enlisted Cornerstone Structural Engineering Group to design ground anchor walls (tieback walls) and conventional retaining walls underpinning/supporting the existing State Route 99 bridges at Fulkerth Road. This required extensive coordination with Caltrans District 10 including the development of an innovative slot-cut construction staging procedure to minimize risk to the existing SR 99 bridges which are founded on spread footings that are sensitive to settlement.
